Step 1 – Identify your current situation

It can be helpful to think about how you care for yourself physically and emotional at the moment, and if this is an area you might like to improve. Take this survey to rate how well you think you are doing with self-care practices. We have adapted this survey from Saakvitne and Pearlman (1996).

These questions relate to your physical self-care:

1. Eat regularly (e.g. breakfast, lunch and dinner)
2. Eat healthily
3. Exercise
4. Get regular medical care for prevention
5. Get medical care when needed
6. Do some fun physical activity such as swim, dance, play sports
7. Get enough sleep

These questions relate to your emotional self-care:

1. Spend time with others whose company I enjoy
2. Stay in contact with important people in my life
3. Praise myself
4. Find things that make me laugh
5. Regularly say kind things to myself
6. I am able to control my emotions when I feel sad or angry
7. Seek out comfort when needed through people, places or activities
8. Make time for self-reflection
